Buying a rotary hammer in the Philippines comes down to one number that listings bury and one number they shout. The one they shout is wattage. The one that decides your afternoon is impact energy in joules. Here is how to read both, plus the chuck decision that sets your running costs for years.

Read the joules before the watts

Every listing leads with wattage because it is a big number. Joules are what actually hit the concrete.

Wattage is what the motor draws from the wall. Impact energy is how hard each blow lands, after the piston, hammer mechanism, and gearing have taken their cut. The two track each other only loosely, and the gap can be startling: researching our roundup we found a 650 W tool delivering 1.7 J priced identically to a 1500 W tool delivering 5.5 J. Same money, three times the hitting power.

If a listing quotes watts and hides joules, assume the joules are not flattering.

How much impact energy do you need?

Less than the biggest number on the shelf, and more than the cheapest.

  • 1.3 to 2.0 J: small anchor holes in block and render. Fine for picture rails and light brackets, slow in real concrete.
  • 2.5 J: the sensible household size. Aircon brackets, water heaters, TV mounts, gate posts, grille anchors, up to 26 mm in concrete.
  • 5.5 J: 32 mm in concrete, rebar dowels, chasing conduit runs. Worth it if you are renovating rather than maintaining.
  • 9 to 10 J: breaking slabs and 40 mm through-holes. This is SDS Max territory and more tool than a house needs.

The reason to have a little headroom is time, not bragging rights. A 2.5 J tool drills a 12 mm hole in seconds where a 1.5 J tool takes a minute and gets hot doing it.

SDS Plus or SDS Max?

This decision costs you money every time you buy a bit, so make it deliberately.

SDS Plus uses a 10 mm shank and covers tools up to roughly 32 mm in concrete. The bits are cheap, every hardware store carries them, and a decent set costs less than one SDS Max chisel. This is the right chuck for a house.

SDS Max uses an 18 mm shank on heavier tools, from 40 mm holes upward. The tools are 6 kg and up, the bits cost several times more, and outside the big chains they can be hard to find. Buy it when you are genuinely breaking concrete, not because the joule figure looks impressive.

Corded or cordless?

Corded wins on power per peso and never stops mid-hole. A corded 1500 W hammer delivers 5.5 J for less than most cordless tools ask for 4.5 J.

Cordless wins when you are drilling a handful of holes in scattered places, working somewhere without power, or up a ladder where a trailing cord is a genuine hazard. Two cautions: most cordless hammers are sold as bare tools, so add a battery and charger before you compare prices, and check which battery platform it uses. A 20V platform shared with drills and grinders is worth more than a slightly stronger tool on a battery line you own nothing else in.

Check the modes before you assume

A rotary hammer with two modes drills and hammer-drills. A rotary hammer with three modes adds a rotation stop, which turns it into a small breaker for lifting tile, chasing conduit, and cleaning up openings.

That third mode is the reason most people are glad they bought a rotary hammer rather than a hammer drill, and at least one tool in our roundup does not have it. The listing rarely says so plainly. Count the modes.

How many joules do I need?

For a Philippine home, 2.5 J is the sensible size. It sets aircon brackets, water heaters, TV mounts, and grille anchors without complaint, and it reaches 26 mm in concrete. Below 2 J the tool starts to feel like a hammer drill again. Above 5 J you are buying a tool for chasing walls and breaking slabs.

Why does wattage not tell me how fast it drills?

Wattage is what the motor draws from the wall, not what the bit delivers to the concrete. The piston design, the hammer mechanism, and the gearing decide how much of that reaches the hole. A 650 W tool here manages 1.7 J while a 1500 W tool manages 5.5 J, so watts scale with joules only very roughly. Compare joules.

Can a rotary hammer replace my drill?

For concrete, yes, and it is far better at it. For everything else, not really. Most rotary hammers turn at 800 to 1300 rpm, which is slow for wood and steel, and the SDS Plus chuck will not hold ordinary round-shank bits without an adapter. Keep a normal drill for general work.
