A dehumidifier pulls water out of the air. That sounds simple, and it is, but the category hides one fact that decides whether you will be happy with your purchase: two completely different machines are sold under the same name, and they differ in output by a factor of ten or more.
Compressor or peltier, what is the difference?

A compressor dehumidifier works like a fridge. A refrigerant runs through a cold coil, air blows across it, and the water in that air condenses and drips into a tank. These are the big ones: heavy, on castors, with a fan you can hear.

A peltier dehumidifier (also sold as “semiconductor” or “electronic”) uses a thermoelectric chip to chill a small metal plate. No refrigerant, no compressor, almost no noise.

Here is the trap. Many peltier listings advertise coverage like “40 sqm” or “40–60 sqm” next to an extraction rate of 450 ml a day. Those two claims cannot both be true. When they disagree, believe the extraction rate. A machine that removes 450 ml in 24 hours is not conditioning a 40 sqm sala; a single person breathing and sweating in that room adds more moisture than that in a day.
Peltier units also fade in cool conditions, needing roughly 25°C or warmer to work well. In an air-conditioned room, which is exactly where Filipino households notice condensation, that works against them.
How many liters per day do you need?
Match the number to the problem, not to your budget.
- 500 ml to 1,080 ml/day. A wardrobe, an aparador, a shoe cabinet, a camera dry box, a small bathroom. The peltier class is genuinely correct here.
- 12 L/day. One bedroom or a small studio with damp walls, aircon condensation, or a musty smell. This is where most households should land.
- 20 L/day. A bedroom plus indoor laundry, or a room that stays damp through the rainy season.
- 30 L/day. An open sala, a whole floor, a stockroom, or a house with a recurring mold problem.
Buying bigger than you need is not harmful, just more expensive and louder. Buying smaller than you need means the machine runs constantly and never wins.
What about the tank and the drain hose?
The tank size in the specs is not a feature, it is a chore counter.
Run the arithmetic. A 12L/day unit with a 3L tank fills in about six hours of hard work. A 30L/day unit with a 4L tank fills in around three. Nobody is emptying a tank every three hours.
So the thing that matters is the continuous drain port. Almost every compressor unit here has one: you attach a hose and run it to a floor drain, a basin, or the shower, and the machine simply never stops.
