Arc light burns eyes permanently, and it does its damage before anything hurts. That makes a welding helmet the one piece of kit where buying badly has consequences you cannot undo. Fortunately the decision is simpler than the spec sheets suggest: one feature matters far more than the rest, and it is available for well under ₱1,000.
Variable shade is the whole decision
Everything else on a welding helmet spec sheet is secondary to this.
An auto-darkening lens sits clear at around DIN 3 or 4 so you can see the joint, then darkens the instant it detects an arc. The question is what it darkens to.
Fixed shade helmets darken to one number, usually 11, and that is that. Variable shade helmets let you dial anywhere from DIN 9 to 13.
That matters because the right shade changes with the job. Low-amp TIG needs a lighter lens or you cannot see the puddle at all and your welds wander. High-amp stick needs a darker one or you finish the day with aching eyes. A fixed shade 11 is a compromise that suits general stick welding around 100 to 200 A and nothing else particularly well.

Reading the shade numbers
Roughly, matched to what you are running:
- DIN 9 to 10: TIG, and stick welding under about 100 A.
- DIN 11: general stick welding, roughly 100 to 200 A. The most common single setting.
- DIN 12 to 13: high-amp stick and heavy MIG above 200 A.
Start a shade darker than you think you need and work lighter until the puddle is clearly visible. If your eyes feel gritty or sore hours after a session, you were too light and you have had a mild dose of arc eye.
The specification that actually protects you
Here is the part listings rarely explain: the lens blocks UV and infrared whether or not it has darkened. That is what the DIN 16 UV/IR rating means, and it is a property of the filter glass, not the electronics.
So the failure mode of a cheap auto-darkening helmet is not blindness. It is a lens that fails to switch, leaving you with a visible-light flash and arc eye: painful, and gone in a couple of days. Unpleasant, not permanent.
That still makes the rating worth insisting on. A helmet that publishes DIN 16 has told you what its glass does. Several helmets in our roundup publish no shade range and no UV rating at all, which is a strange thing to leave out of a safety product.
Sensitivity, delay, and sensors
Three secondary controls, in the order they will matter to you.
Sensitivity decides how strong an arc must be to trigger the lens. Turn it up for low-amp TIG, down if fluorescent shop lights or a neighbour’s arc make it flicker. Delay sets how long the lens stays dark after the arc stops, from about 0.1 to 1.0 seconds. Short for tacking, long for hot heavy work where the glowing puddle would otherwise dazzle you. Sensor count is usually two, which is fine; four helps when your hand or the workpiece sits between the arc and the helmet.
An external shade knob is a small feature worth noticing: it changes shade without taking the helmet off.
What about switching speed?
It is the number every listing shouts, and it is the one that matters least.
The helmets in our roundup range from 1/5000 to 1/25000 of a second. All of those are faster than your eye reacts, and far faster than the arc takes to reach full brightness. The difference is real, but it will change your working life much less than a shade range will. Do not pay a premium for it.
Do not forget the hand mask
A plain hand-held mask costs a fraction of an auto-darkening helmet and cannot fail. As your only face protection it is poor, because one hand is permanently occupied and you must position the rod blind before striking.
As a second mask it earns its place immediately: for a helper steadying the work, for someone watching, or as the backup for the day your helmet battery dies mid-job.

What shade number do I need?

Is a fixed-shade helmet safe?

How many arc sensors do I need?
Two is enough for most work. Sensors detect the arc, so more of them means fewer failures to trigger when your hand, the workpiece, or a jig sits between the arc and the helmet. If you weld a lot of awkward joints in tight corners, four is worth having.
Does a faster switching time make a difference?
Less than the numbers suggest. Every auto-darkening helmet worth buying switches in a small fraction of a blink, and the difference between 1/5000 and 1/25000 of a second is real but marginal. Spend your attention on shade range and sensitivity control instead.
What does the DIN 16 UV/IR rating mean?
It means the lens blocks ultraviolet and infrared to that level whether or not it has darkened. This is the protection that saves your eyes if the electronics fail, so it is the one number worth insisting on. A helmet that will not publish it is a helmet to skip.
