The glass stays dark, so you strike the arc blind

A passive shield. You hold it in one hand, and the glass is dark all the time.

That means the working sequence is: position the rod against the joint, raise the mask into place, then strike the arc blind. Experienced welders do this without thinking. Beginners find it is exactly how you end up with wandering starts and electrodes welded to the work.

It also means one hand is permanently occupied, so you cannot steady the piece or brace your welding arm.

As your only face protection this is a poor choice when auto-darkening helmets start at a fraction of a day’s wages.

Shade 12 dark glass, fixed, in a full-face shield that covers the jaw and throat. Shade 12 suits stick welding above roughly 150 A; at lower currents it is on the dark side and seeing the puddle is harder.

The glass will shatter if dropped on concrete, though replacements are cheap. Powerhouse does not publish a UV and IR rating for the glass, which is a gap worth noting.

Priced so nobody nearby has to watch an arc unprotected
