A pee pad is bought once and used every day, so the figure that matters is not the sticker price but the cost per pad, weighed against whether it is big enough for your dog and whether it stays where you put it.

Listings with no pad size or count ranked lower

We compared the most popular dog pee pads on Shopee PH on the things that decide whether a pad works in a real house: cost per pad rather than pack price, pad area against the size of dog it is sold for, the layer count and construction where the brand publishes it, how odour is handled (scent, charcoal, or nothing), and whether the pad has adhesive to keep it on tile. We leaned on strong owner ratings with enough volume to mean something, and we discounted listings that state neither pad size nor pack count. One honest note: several listings in this category advertise antibacterial or sterilisation functions with no published testing behind them, and we have not scored any pad on those claims.

Above 15kg, buy the 90 x 120 cm XL pad

Size is the mistake people make most, and it is not about absorbency.

• Up to about 15 kg (aspin puppies, shih tzu, pomeranian, most cats): a 45 x 60 cm pad is plenty.
• Above about 15 kg (labrador, golden retriever, german shepherd): you want the XL size, roughly 90 x 120 cm.

Big dogs do not overshoot because a pad is too thin. They overshoot because they stand in the middle and aim past the edge. A 6-layer pad at 45 x 60 cm does not fix that. Four times the area does.

Buying too big is a real cost too. A small dog uses a fraction of an XL pad and you pay for all of it, so match the pad to the dog rather than buying the biggest one available.

Why cost per pad beats pack price

This is the number that governs how you actually use pads, and almost no listing shows it to you.

A puppy in training gets through three or four pads a day. A trained adult uses one or two. Do the arithmetic on a month at four a day and a ₱12 pad costs around ₱1,440 more than a ₱2.50 pad. That gap is why owners on premium pads start leaving them down too long, and a pad left down too long teaches a dog to go beside it.

Work it out before you buy: pack price divided by pad count. Where a listing states neither the pad size nor the pack count, that is a reason to message the seller before paying, because you cannot compare it against anything.

Layers, absorbency, and what they actually mean

Layer counts are the headline spec in this category and they are more useful than most.

• Double layer: a top sheet and an absorbent core. Fine for a small dog’s single accident.
• 5 layers: typically a tear-resistant cover, a locking layer, an absorbent core, a second locking layer, and a plastic liner underneath. The locking layers are the point, because they stop absorbed liquid squeezing back out when the dog stands on a used pad.
• 6 layers: the thickest builds, usually paired with the XL sizes.

The number to look for alongside it is liquid capacity, sometimes given in cups. Around four cups is a genuine medium-dog figure. Where a brand publishes neither, assume the low end.

Grey charcoal pads can hide blood in your dog’s urine

All three are legitimate. They solve different problems.

Scented pads mask ammonia. In a condo unit where the pad sits near the sala with the aircon running, that is the real problem being solved, and lavender pads are popular here for exactly that reason.

Bamboo charcoal pads adsorb odour compounds instead, so the room smells of less rather than of something else. This is the better choice for a dog that licks or chews its pad, and for anyone who finds perfumed pads overwhelming. The trade-off is cosmetic: on a grey charcoal surface you cannot spot blood or unusual colour in your dog’s urine, and that is a genuine early warning sign.

Unscented is the safe default while training. Some dogs refuse a heavily perfumed pad outright, and a refused pad is worse than a smelly one.

On tile, tabs stop a puppy pushing the pad away

On tile, which is most Filipino homes, yes. Adhesive tabs or a sticky backing keep the pad where you put it. Without them an active puppy will push a pad across the floor and then toilet where the pad used to be.

Two things to know: adhesive holds well on smooth tile and lifts on rough or textured floors, and plenty of cheap bulk packs drop the tape to hit their per-pad price. A bulk pack that keeps the tape is doing something unusual and worth crediting.

Cheap pack, or cheap per use?

Cost per pad, not pack price. A ₱599 pack of 50 costs about ₱12 a pad. A ₱299 box of 120 costs about ₱2.50. That ratio decides whether you change pads when they need changing or ration them, and rationing is how accidents start.

Pad area versus dog size. 45 x 60 cm covers small and medium dogs. Large breeds need roughly 90 x 120 cm. Big dogs do not overshoot because the pad is too thin, they overshoot because they stand in the middle, so buy area rather than layers.

How odour is handled. Fragrance masks ammonia, which suits a small unit. Bamboo charcoal adsorbs it, which suits a dog that mouths its pad. Some dogs refuse perfumed pads outright, so start unscented if you are still training.

Adhesive. Tape or a sticky backing keeps the pad still on tile. It is the difference between a pad your puppy uses and a pad your puppy drags into the sala.

What the listing does not say. A pad with no stated size and no stated pack count cannot be compared on cost. That is a reason to ask the seller before buying, not a reason to assume the worst, but it should count against a listing.
