What do you need before bringing home a puppy or kitten?
Get these before the first day, so the first week goes to settling in.
- Food it already knows. Ask the shelter, breeder or previous owner what they fed and buy the same. To change it, mix in the new food over about a week; our dog food and cat food rankings help you choose what to move to.
- A carrier for the ride home and every vet visit after it.
- For a kitten, a litter box and litter. For a puppy, pee pads by the door while it learns to go outside.
- A bed in a quiet corner (see our dog bed rankings) and two or three toys from the dog toy or cat toy lists, so the chewing goes somewhere you chose.
- Book a vet visit in the first week for vaccines and deworming. Hold off on vitamins until the vet says the animal needs them, since a complete puppy or kitten food usually covers it.
