How do you get your home ready for a brownout?

Outages come with typhoons, and in the hot months with grid alerts. Build the kit in this order, so the first thing you buy covers the first hour of darkness.

  1. Start with an emergency light on each floor. Most stay plugged in and light up as soon as the grid drops.
  2. Add a flashlight for the walk to the breaker panel or outside, where a wall-mounted light can't follow you.
  3. For longer outages, a portable power station keeps phones charged and a fan turning. Multiply the watts of what you will plug in by the hours you need, and buy more watt-hours than that, since the inverter loses some.
  4. If outages last days, a solar panel refills the station by day. Match the panel's connector and voltage to the station's solar input before you order.
  5. Before the rainy season starts, charge everything and run each item once. A battery left flat for months may not take a full charge again.
