Why can’t you just use human shampoo?

Your skin is acidic, around pH 5.5. A dog’s skin is closer to neutral, roughly pH 6 to 7.4. That gap matters more than it sounds.

Never use a dog flea shampoo on a cat. Many contain permethrin, which is highly toxic to cats and can cause tremors or seizures. Tea tree and other essential oils are also risky for them.

Only use a product on your cat if the label clearly says it’s cat-safe. Reach for a dog-and-cat or cat-specific shampoo, and keep strong medicated or flea washes off cats unless your vet approves. Most cats groom themselves anyway, so they rarely need a bath.

Once a month suits most dogs, as over-bathing dries skin

For most dogs, about once a month is a good default. Short-coated dogs with healthy skin can stretch to every 1 to 3 months, while active, outdoor, or extra-mabaho dogs may need it a bit more often.

Don’t overdo it. Over-bathing strips the natural oils from the coat and leaves the skin dry and itchy, the opposite of what you want in our humid, sweaty weather.
