Voltaren Emulgel review: the only real anti-inflammatory here

Why is it different from a Salonpas patch?

This is the whole reason it wins, so here it is plainly.

Almost every pain product on the Philippine shelf is a counterirritant. Methyl salicylate, menthol and camphor produce heat or cold on the skin, and that sensation competes with the pain signal on its way to your brain. It genuinely helps, it is cheap, and it does nothing to the inflammation underneath.

Diclofenac is a different class. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, the same family as ibuprofen, and in this gel base it is absorbed into the tissue where it acts on the inflammation itself.

That distinction matters when the area is actually swollen. A sprained ankle, a strained shoulder, a knee that is warm to the touch: those are inflammation, and a menthol patch is the wrong tool for them. A stiff neck from a bad night’s sleep is not inflammation, and a patch is fine.

How is it to use?

It rubs in as a gel rather than sitting on the skin as an oil, which is the practical difference from a liniment. You can put a shirt on straight after, and it does not mark bedding.

There is no cooling hit. That is worth expecting, because a lot of people judge a pain product by whether it announces itself, and this one does not. It is working when you cannot feel it.

The routine is three to four applications a day for several days, which is more work than sticking on a patch and forgetting it. And 20g is a small tube. A whole lower back will empty it quickly. A knee or a wrist will get several days out of it.

Against a 40-patch box of Salonpas at around ₱210, this looks expensive: roughly 40 applications against a tube that might give you a couple of dozen for a knee. On cost per use alone the patch wins comfortably.

But you are not buying the same thing. You are buying the only product in this category that treats inflammation, backed by a published leaflet and long clinical use, from Watsons’ Shopee Mall store. For a specific swollen injury that is worth the difference. As a general daily rub for a stiff back, it is not.

Who the Voltaren Emulgel 20g suits

Buy this if you have an actual injury: a sprain, a strain, something visibly swollen or warm. It is the right choice when the problem is inflammation rather than stiffness, and it is worth keeping one tube in the house for exactly that. If you want something for everyday aches, buy patches instead and save this for when they are not enough. And check with a pharmacist first if aspirin or ibuprofen disagrees with you.
