Sony HT-S20R soundbar review

Why does real 5.1 matter at this price?

Because almost nothing else near this money delivers it. Soundbars in the ₱6,000 to ₱13,000 range overwhelmingly use one bar and claim surround through psychoacoustic processing or wall reflections. That works in a symmetrical, hard-walled room and falls apart in the L-shaped, open-plan, curtain-heavy spaces most Filipino homes actually have.

Two speakers physically placed behind the sofa need no such luck. When a car passes behind you in a film, it comes from behind you.

What is the catch?

Wires. The rear speakers and the subwoofer are all wired, so a clean installation means routing cable around the room. That is genuinely more work than the wireless subwoofers on the TCL S55H or Samsung HW-B450F, and it is the reason some people step down to a single bar they can set up in five minutes.

The second limit is format support. This decodes Dolby Digital and nothing more current. No Dolby Atmos, no DTS:X, and no up-firing drivers, so overhead effects in modern soundtracks simply are not reproduced.
