How good is the picture?

The best here for the money. 4MP at 2.5K means you can zoom into a frame and still make out a face across a sala, which is the moment a camera either earns its keep or does not. The cheaper 1080p cameras all fall down at exactly that point.

Full-color night vision is the other half of it. Grey infrared tells you someone was there. Color tells you what they were wearing, which is what you need if you ever have to explain it to anyone.

360° full pan covers a whole room from one corner, and the camera tracks a person as they move across it.

What does it actually alert you about?

People, and only people. AI human detection and tracking filters out the electric fan and the curtain, which is the difference between a camera you leave switched on and one you mute.

But there is no pet detection, so a dog crossing the room will still trigger it, and no baby-cry or noise alerts. The C302, which is cheaper, has all three. You are paying for the sensor here, not the alert list.

What about the app and the network?

Dual-band Wi-Fi is genuinely useful. Most cameras in this category are 2.4GHz only, sharing a crowded band with every other device in the house. The C400 can move to 5GHz.

The catch is that it is locked to Xiaomi Home. If you already run Tapo or EZVIZ cameras, this one will not join them, and you will be checking two apps.

Does it need a microSD card?

For local recording, yes, and it is not included. Without a card you get live view and notifications only, or you pay for a Xiaomi cloud plan. Buy a card at the same time, since a camera that only records to the cloud stops recording when your internet drops.
