At around ₱399 as of August 12, 2026 for 200 tablets. This is one of the most commonly recommended supplements in cat ownership, and it is worth knowing what happened to the evidence behind it.

The research went the other way

Lysine is an amino acid, and the idea behind it was reasonable: in a laboratory, herpesviruses need arginine to replicate, and lysine interferes with arginine. Feline herpesvirus is the main cause of the recurring sneezing and runny eyes that people call cat flu, so the theory travelled quickly.

The trials did not support it. A 2015 systematic review in BMC Veterinary Research pulled together the in vitro work and the clinical studies and concluded that lysine does not prevent or treat feline herpesvirus infection. It found no effect on viral replication kinetics in cell culture, and in the cat studies no benefit, with some trials reporting more frequent infection and more severe disease in the supplemented groups. The authors recommended stopping its use.

The same review noted that lysine was still being recommended by the large majority of cat clinics. That gap between what is recommended and what is supported is the reason this page is worth reading before you buy.

What a sneezing cat usually needs instead

Feline herpesvirus never leaves. Most cats catch it young, and it hides in the nerves and flares when the cat is stressed: a move, a new pet, boarding, a hot week.

The things that actually help are unglamorous. Reduce stress, because stress is the trigger. Wipe the nose and eyes with warm water so the cat can breathe and see. Steam, from sitting with the cat in a bathroom after a hot shower, loosens a blocked nose. And warm the food slightly to lift its aroma, because a cat that cannot smell its food stops eating, and a cat that stops eating for a few days risks liver trouble on top of the flu.

When it stops being a home problem

Go to a vet if the cat stops eating, if the discharge from the nose or eyes turns yellow or green, if there is an eye ulcer, or if a kitten is affected. Secondary bacterial infection is common and does need treatment, and eye involvement in herpesvirus can damage the cornea.

None of that is a supplement’s job.
