What does the spring actually do?

It gives the toy a fight back. On a normal wand, the feather goes wherever the paw pushes it and then stops. Here the coil spring loads up under a swat and snaps the head back, so the target keeps moving after the paw lands. That stop-start motion is exactly what cats hunt by, and it is why a cat stays with this longer than with a static toy on the floor.
