Herbal supplements are the hardest category we cover, because the usual buying signals barely work. Ratings measure satisfaction with a purchase, not a health outcome. Sales volume measures marketing reach. And plenty of what sells well isn’t registered at all.

So we ranked on the things you can actually verify.

We checked every product against the FDA

• FDA registration and advisories. We checked every product against the FDA’s published advisories before adding it. One product was dropped entirely: Simplee Supplements Sambong 500 mg, the subject of a public health warning (Advisory 2024-1767) confirming it was unregistered. It had more than ten thousand ratings. We removed it anyway.
• Label clarity. Does it name the active ingredient? At what dose? Products that tell you what you’re taking rank above products that say “herbal blend 500 mg”.
• Where it’s sold. A pharmacy chain or the manufacturer’s own store beats an anonymous marketplace seller, because counterfeits and unregistered stock are a live problem here.
• Evidence behind the ingredient. Some botanicals have real published literature. Others rest entirely on tradition. Both are legitimate reasons to be interested, but you should know which you’re buying.

Two FDA searches take about two minutes before you buy

Two places, and it takes about two minutes.

1. The FDA verification portal at verification.fda.gov.ph. Search the exact product name. A registered product has a Certificate of Product Registration (CPR).
2. The advisories list at fda.gov.ph. Search the brand and the product name. This is where public health warnings against unregistered products are published.

If a product doesn’t appear in the portal, that isn’t a paperwork quibble. It means the FDA has not evaluated its quality or safety, and the agency’s own wording is that it cannot assure either.

We do this before adding anything to our catalog. It’s why one popular product from this category, with more than ten thousand owner ratings, is not on this list: the FDA had already issued a public health warning against it as unregistered.

Claims about blood sugar, cholesterol or the liver break the rules

Every food supplement sold here must carry that phrase, in bold capitals, on the label. Advertising must also carry a Filipino reminder that the product ay hindi gamot at hindi dapat gamiting panggamot sa anumang uri ng sakit: it is not a medicine and should not be used to treat any illness.

That is not fine print to skim past. It is the regulator telling you plainly that nobody has established the product treats anything.

So when a listing hints that a capsule manages your blood sugar, your cholesterol, or your liver, it is doing something it is not permitted to do. Those are conditions you manage with a doctor and actual monitoring. No capsule bought online replaces that.

Supplement or registered medicine: which are you buying?

This distinction is worth real money.

• A food supplement carries no approved therapeutic claim, no approved dose, and no evaluated indication.
• A registered herbal medicine, like lagundi (Vitex negundo) preparations, has an approved indication, an approved dose, and a documented safety profile. It cleared a much higher bar.

If a registered medicine exists for what you’re after, it is almost always the better buy, and often the cheaper one.

A label saying herbal blend 500mg tells your doctor nothing

Three things separate a good label from a vague one:

• Named actives. “Bacopa monnieri extract 125 mg” tells you something. “Herbal blend 500 mg” tells you nothing, and makes it impossible for a doctor to check interactions.
• A stated strength. Without milligrams you can’t compare products or know what you’re taking.
• The preparation. Rind or fruit, leaf or root, extract or powder. These differ in composition, and good labels say which.

Blends versus single herbs: a five-botanical 550 mg capsule spreads that weight five ways, so each is present in a modest amount. A single-herb 500 mg capsule gives you a known dose of one thing. Breadth or depth, your call, but know which you’re buying.

Pharmacy chains and makers’ own stores lower the risk of fakes

Prefer pharmacy chains and manufacturer-owned stores: Watsons, Southstar Drug, Mercury Drug, The Generics Pharmacy, or a brand’s own official store. This category has a real counterfeit and unregistered-product problem, and a short supply chain is the simplest defense.

Many Philippine drugstores also sell supplements per piece (tingi). For an unfamiliar herb, that’s the smart way in: try one capsule for pocket change instead of committing to a bottle you might abandon.

Diagnosed condition? See a doctor and bring the bottle

None of these is a medicine. Every food supplement in the Philippines must carry “no approved therapeutic claim” on its label, plus a Filipino reminder that it ay hindi gamot. That’s the regulator saying plainly that nobody has established it treats anything.

The one exception in this list is Plemex Forte, which is a registered OTC herbal medicine rather than a supplement, and cleared a much higher bar as a result.
