What a strap actually moves

A strap does not make your grip stronger. It reroutes the load. The bar’s weight travels through the cotton and into your wrist and forearm instead of hanging off your finger flexors, which are the smallest muscles anywhere near a deadlift and the first thing to quit.

That is why the effect is so obvious on the first set. Deadlifts, barbell rows, shrugs and rack pulls all stop ending early. You find out what your back can actually do.

What it cannot do is help you press. A strap needs something to wrap around and a pull to resist, so bench, overhead press and dips get nothing from it.

Give it three sessions before you judge it

Wrapping a strap is a knack. Tail toward the palm, under and around the bar, then roll the bar toward you so the wrap tightens on itself. The first few attempts feel slow and slightly ridiculous, and by the third session you will do it without looking.

The padding on the wrist loop is the part worth having. Without it a loaded strap digs a line into the wrist on heavy sets.

The sets to leave them off

Grip strength is worth keeping. It is one of the more reliable everyday markers of general physical capacity, and it only develops when your hands are the thing under strain.

So use straps where they earn their place, on your heaviest pulls and your long high-rep back work, and keep your warm-up and back-off sets strapless. That way your forearms still get their work and you are not building a lift that only exists with equipment on.

If your gym allows loose chalk, that is the cheaper first answer to a slipping bar, especially in a humid room where sweaty hands are the real problem.

What they will not get past

Competition rules are worth knowing before you build a pull around them. Under IPF rules lifting straps are never allowed on a competition lift. Wrist wraps are, up to 1m long and 8cm wide, but wraps brace the joint and do nothing for grip. Plenty of strongman events allow straps on the deadlift, so check your own federation.

Who should buy the padded straps

Buy these if your hands give out before your back and legs do on pulls. At this price there is no real argument against trying them, and the buying history behind this listing is the strongest on the page.

Check the stitching the day they arrive, since this is an unbranded pair with no published load rating.

If you want more assist, or faster

To take grip out of the lift entirely, the weight lifting hooks hang the bar off a metal hook instead. For a strap that cinches one-handed on cable work, see the XXAO D-ring wrist straps. If your wrists ache on presses rather than pulls, you want the Aolikes wrist wraps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do lifting straps actually help?

Yes, and the effect is immediate. The strap takes the bar's weight through your wrist instead of your fingers, so a heavy deadlift or row ends when your back tires rather than when your hands open.

Are lifting straps allowed in powerlifting competition?

No. IPF rules never permit lifting straps on a competition lift. Wrist wraps are allowed, up to 1m long and 8cm wide, but they are a different tool that does nothing for grip.

How do I put them on?

Thread the tail through the loop, tighten it around your wrist with the tail pointing at your palm, wrap the tail under and around the bar, then roll the bar toward you until it bites. Give it three sessions before you judge it.

Are unbranded lifting straps safe under load?

The failure point is the stitching, and no unbranded listing publishes a load rating. Inspect the seams before every heavy set and retire them at the first sign of fraying. This ships from a general reseller, so check the stitching quality as soon as it arrives.
