8 to 10ft reaches ceiling fans and aircon units

Size it to your tallest real job, not to the biggest ladder you can afford. Every extra foot costs money, weight, and storage space.

It free-stands, so you can work in the middle of a room or garden, and the scaffold mode is genuinely useful on stairs where nothing else sits level. The catch: it folds to a long bundle that wants garage or bodega wall space, and it’s heavier to move alone.

Decide on storage first. A ladder that doesn’t fit your home gets left somewhere awkward and stops being used.

Why the load rating can be two numbers

On a ladder, the maximum load is the safety spec. Up here, one detail catches people out: the safe load can change with the position.

So: look for a published rating, and check whether it’s given per position. A brand that publishes the split is being more honest than one publishing a single flattering number, not less.

Stand it a quarter of its height from the wall, feet flat

Telescopic ladders have one maintenance habit worth knowing: keep the sliding sections clean. Grit in the rails is what makes them stick, bind, or refuse to collapse. Wipe them down after outdoor use and store them dry. Aluminum tolerates damp storage well, so this is about dirt, not rust.

For any straight ladder, set the base roughly a quarter of the working height away from the wall. Too upright is how straight ladders tip backwards. Check the non-slip feet sit flat, especially on the polished tile most Filipino homes have.
