Choosing an emergency light in the Philippines starts with one question, and it isn’t “how bright?” It’s how long do your brownouts last? On a fixed battery, brightness and runtime work against each other, so a light that floods your sala for 3 hours can be the wrong buy when your power is out for five. Here’s how to decide.
How long does your power actually go out?
Start here, because it decides everything else.
- Announced maintenance brownouts (2–3 hours): 3–4 hours of runtime is enough. Spend your money on brightness instead.
- Evening outages (4–6 hours): you want 8 hours or more on both lamps. In practice that means a 12V battery of 7Ah or larger.
- All-night or storm outages: look for the longest single-lamp runtime you can get, and consider two lights in different rooms rather than one big one.
Buying on brightness alone is the most common mistake in this category. A dim light that lasts is more useful than a bright one that dies before Meralco comes back.
How many lumens do you need?
Lumens measure light output. Wattage only tells you power draw, though on LED it’s a rough proxy.
- 200–400 lumens (1.5–2W lamps): a safety light. You can walk around, find things, get to bed. You can’t read across a room.
- 1,500–2,600 lumens (10–15W lamps): a usable room. You can cook, eat, and help with homework normally.
Be skeptical of the word “ultrabright” with no number behind it. Read the lumen figure, and if there isn’t one, read the wattage.
Why battery capacity is the honest spec
Runtime claims vary between sellers for the same product. Battery capacity doesn’t lie the same way, so use it as your cross-check.
Capacity in watt-hours is volts × amp-hours. A 12V 9Ah pack holds 108Wh; a 6V 4.5Ah pack holds 27Wh, four times less. Divide by the total lamp wattage and you get a rough runtime. If a listing’s promise is far above that arithmetic, distrust the listing.
We hit this while researching: one model is listed by some sellers with a longer runtime on two lamps than on one. That’s impossible. More lamps always drain a battery faster. When published figures conflict, trust the single-lamp number and the amp-hours.
Does automatic switching matter?
Yes, and it’s the reason to buy this instead of a torch. An automatic emergency light stays plugged in, charging, and comes on by itself the instant power cuts. Nobody has to find anything in the dark. Good ones switch in under 0.1 second.
Two related features are worth paying for:
- Overcharge protection, because these live permanently on charge.
