A portable power station is the quiet, indoor-safe answer to a brownout: no fumes, no noise, no petrol. Choosing one comes down to two numbers that listings work hard to blur. Watts decide what you can run. Watt-hours decide how long. Get those right and the rest follows.

Watts or watt-hours: which matters?

Both, and in that order.

Continuous watts is the size of the tap. It caps what you can run at any moment, and no amount of battery changes it. A 300W station cannot start a 1,000W kettle even with a huge pack behind it.

Watt-hours is the size of the tank. It sets how long you can run whatever fits through the tap.

Rough guide for Philippine households:

  • Under 300W: router, LED lights, phone and laptop charging, usually a standard electric fan.
  • 500–800W: the above plus a TV and a small fridge.
  • 1,000W and up: adds heating appliances, a kettle, a rice cooker, a hairdryer.
  • 2,600W: power tools, a microwave, a workshop.

Don’t trust the number in the name

This is the trap in the category, and it’s worth reading twice.

Product names frequently quote surge output, not continuous. The EcoFlow DELTA 3 1000 Air is rated 500W continuous with 1,000W X-Boost. Its name says 1000. What runs your fridge all evening is the 500.

Listing titles get capacity wrong too, in both directions. Researching our roundup we found the RIVER 2 sold as “240Wh” when EcoFlow publishes 256Wh, and the RIVER 2 Pro sold as “700Wh” against a published 768Wh. Neither is a scandal, but it tells you the title is marketing and the spec sheet is the truth.

Also watch for “with Solar Panel” in a title. Panels are usually a separate purchase. Confirm what the price includes.

Why battery chemistry decides the real cost

LiFePO4 cells are typically rated beyond 3,000 cycles, roughly a decade of regular use. Cheaper lithium-ion fades much faster, which on a device you buy once and keep is the difference between good value and an expensive mistake.

Every tier-one unit we looked at states LiFePO4 and a cycle count. The budget tier states neither. Those units also rate capacity in mAh instead of watt-hours, which can’t be converted without the cell voltage they don’t publish. A 72,000mAh rating tells you almost nothing on its own.

That’s the real trade at the bottom of this market: you save money and give up the ability to check what you bought.

Two features worth paying for

Charge time. Brownouts cluster, so a station that refills in an hour is ready for the next cut while a six-hour one isn’t. The best here does 0–100% in 60 minutes; another does 0–80% in 45.

UPS switchover under 10ms. Leave the unit plugged into the wall with your PC or modem plugged into it, and it takes over fast enough that nothing reboots. If you work from home, this single feature can justify the purchase.
