Solar panels look interchangeable on Shopee and they are not. Here is what actually decides which one you should buy, and what the listings do not tell you.

What size panel do you need?

Work from your battery, not your budget. The useful test is whether the panel can refill your power station in one day of sun. Buy fewer watts and you are into multi-day charging; buy more than your station can accept and the extra does nothing.

A rough guide, using the power stations we have reviewed:

  • 256Wh station (like the EcoFlow RIVER 2): 100-125W is comfortable
  • 700-900Wh station: around 220W
  • 1,000Wh and up: 400W if you want a same-day refill

If you have no power station at all, the panel is only useful for charging devices directly or topping up a 12V battery, and those need very different panels.

How do you compare panels fairly?

Divide the price by the watts. Cost per watt is the one number that lets you compare a 60W panel against a 400W one honestly, and it exposes a lot.

In the Philippines right now, good full-size panels land between roughly ₱72 and ₱100 per watt. When a panel costs meaningfully more than that, you are paying for something other than power: a carry case, a longer warranty, a local brand, or a specialist shape. Sometimes that is worth it. You should just know that is what you are buying.

Two warnings on the number. It only compares like with like, so a 2.5W camera panel will always look terrible and that means nothing. And a cheap panel with no published efficiency rating is not really comparable to a documented one at all.

Flexible, folding, or rigid?

These are three different products and the words get used loosely.

  • Folding (portable) panels fold into a case that usually doubles as a kickstand. You carry them out, aim them at the sun, and pack them up. This is what most people want.
  • Flexible panels bend to follow a curved surface, like a van or jeepney roof. They are light and thin, but they have no stand, so you cannot angle them. They are for permanent mounting, not for carrying.
  • Rigid panels sit in an aluminum frame with glass. They are heavy, they do not fold, and they are built to be bolted down for years. A good rigid panel states a wind rating, which matters here more than almost anywhere.

The mistake to avoid is buying a flexible panel expecting a portable one.

Which specs are worth insisting on?

A stated IP rating. IP67 or IP68 for anything living outdoors. The real problem is a listing with no rating at all, because then you do not know what happens when the rain starts, and in this country it will.

A published efficiency figure. The good panels here state 23% to 25%. A brand that publishes nothing is asking you to trust it rather than check it, which is a fair choice to make knowingly and a bad one to make by accident.

The connector. MC4 is the universal standard and plugs into almost anything. XT60 and its variants are manufacturer-specific and need an adapter to feed another brand’s power station. Check what your station’s solar input actually takes before you order.

The warranty, because it varies wildly. Within a single brand’s Philippine range we found panels stating one year and panels stating five, at similar prices. It is worth reading.

How much should you spend?

Most Filipino households are best served in the sweet spot band. Step up only if you own a large power station or you are mounting a permanent system.
