Generic 10kg digital kitchen scale review

Capacity is the number that matters least

Ten kilos sounds generous and it is almost never the binding constraint in a home kitchen.

Think about what you actually weigh. Flour for a cake, a few hundred grams. A chicken, under two kilos. A tray of pork for a party, maybe three. Almost nothing a home cook puts on a scale is anywhere near ten kilos, so the ceiling is headroom you will not use.

What limits you is the other end. Graduation, the smallest step the display moves in, decides whether you can weigh 7g of yeast or only 200g of flour, and every digital scale also has a minimum below which it simply reads zero.

This listing publishes the number you will not use and omits the one you will.

What the missing figure costs you

If the graduation is 1g, this handles flour, sugar, rice and meat perfectly well and cannot do yeast, baking soda, salt or coffee properly.

Buying an unbranded scale

Put a known weight on it: a 1kg bag of sugar or a litre of water. If it reads within a few grams, the scale is sane. If it reads 940g, send it back. Two minutes of checking is worth more on an unbranded scale than any review.

Also check that it holds zero with nothing on the platform, and that it returns to zero after you lift a load off. Drift is the failure mode on cheap load cells and it shows up immediately.
