What coffee actually asks of a scale

Three things, and a cup is not one of them.

Resolution. A double espresso is around 18g in and 36g out, and holding that ratio needs 0.1g steps. On a 1g scale each figure is uncertain by half a gram, which is a few percent at both ends.

A timer. Brew time is the third variable after dose and yield. Without one you are propping a phone against the kettle.

A platform that fits. A pour-over server or a scale that sits under a portafilter has to physically accommodate it, and a raised cup on top can get in the way of both.

The cup is genuinely handy for one job: dosing beans, where it contains them and pours cleanly into a grinder. That is real and it is narrower than the listing implies.

Containment, the same argument as any bowl scale. Loose ingredients stay put and you can weigh and pour in one movement.

The trade-off is capacity: the cup’s own weight uses up part of the scale’s range, and since no maximum capacity is published there is no way to know how much is left.

The questions worth asking before ordering

Three, and they are quick. What is the graduation? What is the maximum capacity? Is there a timer, and does it switch itself off during a three-minute brew?

That last one is the commonest complaint about budget coffee scales and the least published spec in the whole category.

Buy this if the answers come back well, you want one device for dosing beans and weighing small amounts of food, and the small buying history does not put you off.

Skip it if you want a coffee scale you can rely on for brewing, where a published resolution and a timer matter more than a cup.
