A third of cats feel nothing

The response to catnip comes from nepetalactone, a compound in the plant that binds to receptors in a cat’s nose and triggers the rolling, rubbing, drooling performance everybody has seen on the internet.

Sensitivity to it is inherited. Depending on the study, somewhere around a third of cats carry no response at all, and no amount of good catnip changes that. A cat that sniffs and walks away is not bored or broken; it simply did not get the gene.

So if you have never seen your cat react, this treat will most likely be an ordinary treat. That is not a failure of the product.

Kittens are the group least likely to react

Not calm, and not nutrition. It is a tool for moving a cat’s attention.

Redirecting scratching. Rubbing catnip on a scratching post is one of the few reliable ways to get a cat to use the post instead of the sofa.

Carrier training. A carrier that smells interesting is a carrier a cat will walk into, and that changes every vet visit.

Play. Indoor cats in Philippine condos get little stimulation, and the response wears off after ten minutes or so with a refractory period of an hour or two before it works again. Used sparingly it keeps working; left out all day it stops meaning anything.

The treat side of it

Treats should stay under roughly a tenth of a cat’s daily calories: around 20 to 25 kcal for a 4kg adult out of 200 to 250. No calorie figure or pack size is published here, so keep the portion small and take a little out of the meal.
