Why this is the honest shape for a cat treat

Most treats are a recipe: meat plus thickeners, humectants, colors, and something to make them keep. A freeze-dried treat is usually meat with the water taken out and nothing else, because the process itself is the preservation.

Freeze-drying pulls water out at low temperature rather than cooking it off. That matters for a cat because the volatile compounds that make meat smell like meat survive the process instead of being driven off by heat, and cats decide what to eat by smell far more than by taste.

The result is a treat with a very short ingredient list that cats accept almost universally. For a fussy cat, or one recovering from illness and refusing food, a freeze-dried piece is often the thing that works.

Thirty grams is more than it sounds

Weight is a misleading way to compare a freeze-dried treat with a wet one. A lickable strip is mostly water; this is not.
