Lotus LHR709 review: the plated one, for humid workshops

Why does plating matter in the Philippines?

Because humidity does not take days off.

A bare or painted steel hand tool stored in a shed, a garage or a coastal workshop develops surface rust within a season here. On a riveter that is not just cosmetic: rust at the pivot and the jaws is what makes the action stiff, and a stiff riveter is one people stop reaching for.

Nickel plating puts a barrier over the steel. It slows all of that considerably, and it is the single practical reason to choose this over the black LHR708 sitting next to it in the same range.

It is not permanent. Plating chips at the jaws, which is exactly where the tool works hardest, and rust starts from those chips. But it buys years rather than months.

What else is different from the LHR708?

The rating, and not much else.

Lotus labels this HD, heavy duty, where the LHR708 is MD, medium duty. That is Lotus’s own designation rather than a standard, so read it as a relative marker within their range rather than a number you can compare across brands. It tells you this one is built for more sustained work at the top of its size range.

Everything else carries over: the same four nozzle sizes (3/32, 1/8, 5/32 and 3/16 inch, roughly 2.4mm to 4.8mm), the all-steel body with a non-slip grip, the spring-loaded handle that opens the arms and ejects the spent mandrel, and the wrench for changing nosepieces.

The nozzle sizes are quoted in inches, which remains a small nuisance when Philippine hardware shops sell rivets in millimetres.

No swivel head, no stem collector.

Is this hand riveter sulit?

That is about half again as much as the LHR708 at around ₱260 for the same four sizes, and roughly double the Ingco HRS108 or the Tolsen 43001.

The honest test is where the tool will live. In a dry cupboard indoors, the plating buys you very little and the cheaper tools are the better spend. In a shed, a garage, a workshop near the sea, or a work bag that gets rained on, it is the difference between a tool that still works smoothly in three years and one that does not.

Buy this if your tools live somewhere damp: an outdoor shed, an open garage, a coastal workshop, or a work bag that travels in the rain. It is the right choice when you want a tool that will still be smooth in a few years rather than the cheapest one today. If your riveter lives indoors in a drawer, buy the black LHR708 or a Tolsen and save the difference.
