A hand riveter is a simple tool with one real specification: the rivet sizes it will actually set. Almost everything else, the finish, the grip color, the word “industrial” on the box, is decoration.
A published rivet chart was the first thing we checked
We started with the published rivet chart, because a riveter that does not tell you its sizes is asking you to buy on faith. Ingco, Tolsen, Wadfow, Deli and Mitsushi all publish theirs. Several others do not, and they ranked lower for it. We paid particular attention to whether a brand splits the chart by material, since Tolsen’s 13 inch tool sets 6.4mm in stainless while its 10 inch tool is rated for aluminium only, and that is the kind of detail that decides a job. Then we looked at arm length, which is leverage, then body material, steel for toughness and aluminium alloy for weight. After that came the extras that genuinely help: a swivel head for access, a stem collector for tidiness, a quick-change nose for speed. Finally we weighed the owner record and the shop behind it.
3.2 and 4.0mm rivets do most gutter and duct work
Four sizes carry nearly every job in a Philippine home or a small shop:
- 2.4mm for thin sheet, light brackets and repairs to plastic panels.
- 3.2mm and 4.0mm, the two you will use most, for gutters, ducting, frames and general sheet metal.
- 4.8mm for heavier panels and anything that has to take a knock.
Above that, 6.0mm and 6.4mm exist and need a 13 inch tool. Before you buy for those, read the chart carefully: Tolsen’s 13 inch riveter sets 6.4mm in stainless, while its 10 inch tool is rated for aluminium rivets only. Same-sized rivets in different materials are not the same job.
A brand that publishes its chart is telling you it measured something. Ingco, Tolsen, Wadfow, Deli and Mitsushi all do. Several others publish nothing, and that is a real mark against them in a category where the chart is the whole specification.
9.5 to 10.5 inch arms are the all-rounder size
Arm length is leverage, and leverage is what turns a stubborn rivet into one clean squeeze.
- 9.5 to 10.5 inches. The all-rounder. Sets the four common sizes, fits in a toolbox, works in reasonably tight spaces. This is what most people should buy.
- 13 inches. Real power, enough for 6mm rivets. Too long for work inside a cabinet, a duct or a wheel arch.
- 17 inches and up. Two-handed. Excellent leverage, but you need a third hand for the workpiece, or a clamp.
- Folding. A 32 inch arm that folds down for storage, which is the answer if you set a lot of large rivets and still want the tool to fit in a bag.
Pay extra for a swivel head and a stem collector
- A 360 degree swivel head. The nose turns while the handles stay where your hands can reach. On gutters, ducting and cabinet interiors this is the difference between doing the job and not doing it.
- An integrated stem collector. Catches the snapped mandrels instead of dropping them on the floor or into an engine bay. Small feature, genuinely useful indoors.
- A replaceable nose. Jaws and noses wear. A tool that lets you swap the nose outlives one that does not.
- A spring-loaded handle that ejects the stem. Saves shaking the tool between rivets, and it is why a beginner finds one riveter easier than another.
- Nosepieces stored on the body. Sounds trivial. It is the reason some owners still have all four nosepieces a year later and others have one.

Does arm length matter on a hand riveter?
More than anything except the rivet chart. Arm length is leverage, and leverage is what turns a stubborn 4.8mm rivet from a two-hand fight into one squeeze. A 10.5 inch tool is the sensible all-rounder. A 13 inch tool sets bigger rivets but will not fit inside a cabinet or a duct. The Wadfow WHR3517 goes to 17 inches and needs both hands, which means you cannot hold the workpiece at the same time.
Steel body or aluminium alloy body?
Steel is tougher and cheaper, aluminium alloy is lighter. Tolsen sells both at the same size: the steel 43001 at 10 inches and the aluminium 43003 at 10.5. If the tool lives in a work bag and gets dropped, take steel. If you set rivets all day and your forearm is the limit, take aluminium alloy. For occasional home use the difference barely shows.
What is a swivel head riveter for?
Access. A 360 degree swivel head lets the nose point into a corner while the handles stay somewhere your hands can reach, which is the difference between doing and not doing a job on ducting, gutters or the inside of a cabinet. Why does my riveter leave the mandrel stuck in the nose?
Usually a worn jaw or the wrong nosepiece for the rivet. Blind rivets pull a mandrel through until it snaps, and the jaws have to grip it hard enough to break it cleanly. Cheap jaws round off over time and start slipping. Check you are on the matching nosepiece first, then look at the jaws. Tools with replaceable noses, like the Deli models, let you fix that instead of buying a new riveter.
How does a blind rivet actually work?
A blind rivet is a hollow body with a mandrel, a pin, running through it. You push it into a hole that goes through both pieces, then the riveter grips the mandrel and pulls. The pull swells the back of the rivet body on the far side, clamping the two pieces together, and then the mandrel snaps off. Blind is the key word: you only need access to one side, which is why it works on gutters, ducts, panels and box sections.
