Twelve numbers, two measurements

A body-composition scale takes exactly two readings.

Weight, from the load cells, which is direct and accurate.

Impedance, from a small current sent up one leg and down the other. Fat, muscle and water conduct differently, so resistance stands in for composition.

Body fat, muscle mass, bone mass, water percentage, visceral fat, protein, BMI, metabolic age and the rest are all calculated from those two figures plus the height, age and sex you typed into the app. They are not twelve independent measurements; they are two measurements through a formula.

That is not a criticism of this scale specifically. It is true of every consumer body-composition scale, including the ones costing five times as much, and it is the single most useful thing to know before comparing the metric counts on two listings.

Which means the price gap is not about accuracy

Since composition figures are a manufacturer’s estimate at any price, a dearer scale is not more truthful about body fat. And a cheap load cell measures weight perfectly well, because that technology is mature.

What the money usually buys further up the range is the app and its lifespan. A named brand’s app keeps being updated and keeps your history; a generic app can be abandoned in a couple of years, and when it goes, so does the graph you were building.

If your plan is to track a trend over years, that is the question worth asking. If you want a scale that shows a weight and a rough fat percentage, this does it for a third of the money.

How to get a reading worth comparing

Three habits, and they matter more than the price of the scale.

Same conditions. First thing in the morning, after the bathroom, before eating or drinking. Impedance follows your body water, so a salty dinner or a hard workout moves the fat reading with no fat involved.

Hard, level floor. Tiles, not a bath mat. A flexing platform reads differently, and this is the commonest reason people think a scale is broken.

Weeks, not days. Daily weight swings a kilo or more on its own.

One restriction

Manufacturers advise against impedance scales for anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device. In pregnancy, the weight is still useful and the composition figures are not.

Who should buy the OOKAS

Buy this if you want a smart scale cheaply, you care mainly about weight with the trend as a bonus, and you are not planning a decade of data.

Skip it if you want the app to still be there in five years.
