Air purifiers are one of the few appliances where the marketing numbers and the useful numbers are different numbers. Here is how to tell them apart, and which units survive the check.

Why CADR came first

We ranked on published CADR first, because it is the one figure that describes real output. Then filter grade (H13 over H11), coverage area, owner ratings on Shopee PH, warranty, and whether replacement filters are actually available here.

We marked down units that publish no CADR and no coverage at all. Two of the cheapest purifiers on this list do exactly that, and they sit at the bottom for it.

How do you size an air purifier to your room?

Start with CADR, the Clean Air Delivery Rate in cubic meters per hour. It measures how much genuinely clean air comes out, so it captures filter quality and fan strength together.

The rule of thumb worth memorizing:

CADR (m³/h) should be at least 5 × your room area (sqm).

That target gives roughly five air changes an hour, which is what allergy guidance generally recommends. Some worked examples:

• 12 sqm bedroom: you want about 60 m³/h. Almost anything qualifies, even the budget units.
• 20 sqm bedroom: about 100 m³/h. The Simplus AirCare 2 Lite at 80 m³/h is slightly under; the Gaabor at 120 m³/h clears it.
• 27 sqm master bedroom: about 135 m³/h. The Xiaomi 4 Compact at 230 m³/h has comfortable headroom.
• 43 sqm open sala: about 215 m³/h. The Xiaomi 4 Lite at 360 m³/h fits; a desk unit never will.

Buy some headroom on purpose. A purifier hitting its rated CADR is running at top speed, which is also its loudest. A unit with spare capacity does the same job on a lower, quieter setting.

If a listing publishes no CADR at all, treat that as the answer. Two of the cheapest units in our ranking do exactly this, and there is no way to size them to your room.

Does the HEPA grade matter?

Yes, more than the marketing implies.

• H11 captures about 95% of particles at the hardest-to-catch size (0.3 microns).
• H13 captures 99.95% of them. That is roughly a hundred times less getting through.

For visible dust and pet hair, either grade helps. For traffic smoke, cooking particles, mold spores and allergens, H13 is what you want. It is also increasingly available cheaply: the Gaabor and the Simplus AirCare 5 both use H13 at budget prices.

Watch for a third stage too. Activated carbon is what handles smells: cooking, cigarettes, pets, and the general smell of a closed-up room. A pure HEPA filter does almost nothing about odor.

Skip ionizers and UV-C, which can make ozone

Some features exist to fill a box on a spec sheet.

• Ionizers and UV-C lamps. Air passes them in a fraction of a second, far too fast for the claimed effect, and both can generate small amounts of ozone, a lung irritant. Skip them.
• Aromatherapy pads. Pleasant, but adding scent is the opposite of removing particles. It is not air cleaning.
• “Smart” without a sensor. If there is no PM2.5 sensor, auto mode is guesswork and the app is just a remote fan-speed slider. The Xiaomi 4 Lite and Levoit Core 300S have real sensors; many cheaper “smart” units do not.
• Coverage claims with no CADR. A sqm figure alone is unverifiable marketing.

Budget a new filter every 6 to 12 months

This is the question most buyers skip, and it changes the ranking.

Filters last 6 to 12 months in Philippine conditions, less if you are near a main road or run the unit continuously. That replacement is an annual cost for as long as you own the machine, and the filters are proprietary on the major brands, so you cannot shop around freely.

Two ways to soften it. A washable pre-filter, like the one on the Levoit Vital 100S, catches hair and coarse dust so the expensive HEPA layer lasts longer. And running on auto with a sensor means the fan is not pulling dirty air through the filter at full speed all day.

Without a sensor, a smart app is just a remote

• CADR in m³/h. The headline number. A rough sizing rule: CADR ≥ 5 × room area in sqm. A 20 sqm bedroom wants about 100 m³/h or better.
• Filter grade. H13 captures 99.95% of the hardest particle size; H11 manages about 95%. Pay for H13 if allergies or smoke are the reason you are buying.
• A real sensor. Auto mode only means something if there is a PM2.5 sensor behind it. Without one, “smart” is just an app with a fan speed slider.
• Filter cost and availability. Proprietary filters, once a year, for the life of the machine. Check the price before you commit.
• No ionizer or UV-C needed. They add little in a sealed unit and can produce ozone. HEPA plus activated carbon is the combination that works.
